Music
My musical involvement includes performance, recordings, working with various pieces of equipment, coursework using the recording studio, music software, hosting a radio show. Learning two instruments to a professional level, has given me a keen interest in the music industry, especially with regard to music production. I have participated in various performances from a western and eastern point of view, across the UK and throughout Boston, USA. I come from a truly international background and regularly interact with people from different cultures and value systems. I have been involved in various CD recordings, working in recording studios and with equipment for producing music.
Instruments
Violin (grade 8) - have been playing since the age of six years old. Have performed in various orchestras, quartets, bands, recordings, etc, throughout London and in America. Over the many years, I have not only learnt the classical western style of playing as well as the classical eastern style, mainly Indian. Learning the violin has allowed me to pick up other instruments such as keyboard to a basic level. Right now I am teaching my self how to play the Chinese violin.
Tabla (grade 8 equivalent) - have been playing since the age of five years old. Tabla are a unique percussion instrument, from North India. Unique drums because not only do they keep rhythm but also can be tuned to various notes. Traditionally performed in various capacities, as accompaniment to singers for keeping time, as accompaniment in large bands, solo performances, etc. I have performed several times on tabla, including in front of 400 people when I was young. I have learnt the Banares style, from Sharda Sahai. I have within the last few years started to play other styles, and have taken lessons from Sandeep, a senior student of Zakir Hussain.
Performances
On violin and tabla I have performed several times throughout my life, however below are a few performances:
Orchestra (violin) at Haberdashers' Aske's School and at Cambridge University - which includes performances at Royal Albert Hall, Royal Festival Hall, St John's Smith Square, Barbican, Boston University (USA)
Solo tabla performances - Cambridge University, Massuchesettes Institute of Technology (USA), studio recording in Boston (USA)
Group Performance - Boston University, Massuchesettes Institute of Technology, Harvard University, South London Mela, as part of a band which performs on a nine night festival annually
Production/Recording
Working as music production assistant last year in Boston, MA, USA I learnt much about the industry as well as music production. Whilst studying last year in Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Boston I completed a course at MIT in the recording studio which expanded my knowledge of the hardware in the studio, along with software such as Pro Tools and MAX/MSP. Hosting my own weekly radio show, gave me experience in presenting a show, as well as using hardware and software to mix music together. It has also taught me how important it is to be up to date on developments in the music industry. Working with other artists on a combined effort has taught the importance of teamwork skills and leadership skills.
